Description:

The US Department of Transportation, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) wishes to accelerate the introduction and commercialization of integrated vehicle-based safety systems for light vehicles and heavy trucks. These systems will assist drivers and reduce the number and severity of injuries resulting from rear-end, road departure, and lane-change crashes. In pursuit of this goal, this cooperative agreement will be performed in two phases: PHASE 1: The Phase I objective includes the creation of a program management plan and development of functional requirements, a system architecture, system design and integration, performance specifications and a driver-vehicle interface. In addition, this Phase I includes the development of objective test procedures, a data acquisition system and a field operational test plan. PHASE 2: Phase II includes design and fabrication of the deployment vehicles and the fleet of test vehicles (both cars and trucks), finalization of the FOT Plan, conducting a pilot FOT followed by the complete FOT and data analysis. Interested applicants must assemble a team which include all of the following: an automotive original equipment manufacturer (OEM), a heavy truck OEM, a heavy truck fleet operator, and an automotive Tier One supplier. It is strongly recommended that the team supporting the Applicant include a transportation research organization to help conduct human factors studies and/or field operational tests. Interested applicants are advised that no fee or profit will be allowed under this Cooperative Agreement.
